Profile : "LuLubird" the story lady

Retired grade school teacher and Colonial Terraces resident, Mary Lou Lampack will bring her story telling character "LuLubird" to Clinton Square for the enjoyment of young and old alike.

Having grown up with three brothers, Mary Lou learned that telling a good story was a neccessary survival skill. Lately she can be found as the story teller for Head Start and a volunteer for many other organizations.

"LuLu" will be telling many tales including "Rabbit's House" which is an interactive African folktale. She will employ stick puppets for the cast of characters. And the audience will be called on to assist. things 4 kids!

LuLubird will perform in Clinton Square at 12:00 noon & 2:00 PM

Spotlight : Historic Walking Tour of Colonial Terraces
Since Colonial Terraces was built as a planned community, there is a story to tell regarding the ideas and features that are part of what make this neighborhood unique. To help you appreciate what those are, there is a self-guided tour with descriptions.

Ask for the handout with the map and information. This is also available off of the City of Newburgh's official website, and the new "Experience Newburgh" map released in July of 2006.

UPDATE: Our historian and Colonial Terraces resident, Brian Flannery, will be a guide for a group at 11:00 AM. If you want to be part of the group be at Clinton Square (Fullerton & 3rd) before the start time.

Spotlight : Save The Ritz / Safe Harbors

The Ritz Theater is the last remaining of several Newburgh theaters that regularly sent productions to Broadway during its heyday in the 1940s. Neglect and fire have claimed all the others. With a history starting way back in 1913 as Cohen's Opera House, the space saw many changes including conversion to a cineplex. The doors finally closed in June 1999. But the story does not end there.

Although the house was carved up to make the movie theaters, the original stage with the four floors of fly space remains untouched in the building. The plan is to restore the original stage and recreate the house for the stage. Stop by their table and get a peak of what the interior will look like.

As part of the Hotel Newburgh building, which is undergoing an extensive 6 year renovation overseen by Safe Harbors of the Hudson, the completion of the Ritz will be the crowning jewel of this project. Slated to be a state-of-the-art venue for theatre and music performances, this will be a significant development for the City of Newburgh and the the Mid-Hudson region. Just as significant to our city is that under the guidance of Safe Harbors, there will be creation of jobs and the training needed to fill them.

Profile : John Winkler Jr, painter/photographer

Since his recent retirement from IBM, John Winkler Jr has taken the opprtunity to do something he has always wanted to do - pursue becoming an artist.

"I have studied under Paul Gould, a local well known Hudson Valley Artist, for the past 2 years. Also I have attended Pastel classes with Pastel Artist Gayle Fedigan and Watercolor classes with the late Michelle Lester. My primary interest is in painting landscapes, seascapes, animals and flowers. I have painted in oils, pastels, watercolor and acrylics. I am currently doing all my work in oil and pastel."

John is a member of the Kent Art Association, Hudson Valley Artisans Guild, and the Barrett Art Center. He has prints of his work available in various sizes.

  Limelight : Adrian Sicam, keyboard/vocal

The singer, songwriter, keyboardist and teacher, Adrian Sicam is a resident of Colonial Terraces. Born into a musical family, Adrian was raised in Syracuse and attended the University where he received his BFA in music & acting. While at SU, Adrian was a member of the vocal jazz ensemble Windjammer. Upon graduation, Adrian recorded and released his first independent CD of original songs and arrangements entitled Inspired. Larry Hoyt of The Syracuse New Times called the disc "an impressive debut from this multi-talented singer-songwriter".

Over the last several years, Adrian has been working New England’s private party circuit, singing everything from Sinatra to James Brown to Justin Timberlake at dozens of corporate functions, weddings and bar mitzvahs. After releasing his second independent solo CD Hey, Stranger in 2001, Adrian moved to New York City where he taught songwriting, voice and piano and was active as a songwriter and vocalist on several recording sessions. In the spring of 2005, Adrian and his family moved to Newburgh. He continues to teach and perform throughout New England and New York.

Adrian will be the opening act on the main stage at 11:00 AM

  Profile : Susan Fink, painter/pastelist

Because she was born to parents who were both accomplished artists, Susan Fink has always been surrounded by art and the passion for creating it. "Art has always been an important part of my life. My father has instilled not only an abiding love for its creation but an experimental curiosity to explore its many mediums and to continually test its (and my) limits of expression. I shall always be an artist." Susan had dedicated a great deal of time cataloging and preserving the large body of artwork that her father had executed in his many years of being a commercial and fine artist.

Susan's education in art includes The School of Visual Arts, The Art Students League in NYC; and her many affiliations include Pastel Society of America, and Woodstock Artists Association. Her range on medium include pastels, oils, acrylics, watercolor, drawing in pen, pencil, charcoal, and finally printmaking.

  Limelight : Neil Alexander, keyboardist

It's never hard to find the words to describe the music of Neil Alexander - it's just impossible to keep it under a 1,000 words.

Daniel Lanzetta of Pulse Magazine said of Neil ". . . his journey has been marked by a number of musical detours, including colossal romances with an array of styles, from rock to jazz to classical to dance music. Alas, Alexander, now 44 years old, believes he has finally found his niche by melding his assortment of influences and inspirations into a jazz-baked jambalaya, a musical stew of disparate, yet harmonious, ingredients . . . "

He is likely to work a little of everything into a show. You since never know just which sound Neil will go for, don't miss a moment.

Neil will perform on the main stage at 12:00 noon

  Profile : Jessica Rupp, photographer
Jessica is a native of the Newburgh area, and besides her photography she is also a musician of multiple instruments. As much as possible, she is committed to being involved in as many Newburgh arts events as she can - either exhibiting or attending.

Her work consists mostly of landscapes, portraits, and the human form. She studied under Dr. Dan McCormack, an award winning photographer and instructor at Marist College. At the age of only 25, she comments that "I have been doing my photography for 13 years".

Spotlight : Downing Park Planning Committee

Downing Park was named after Newburgh's native son Andrew Jackson Downing, eminent horticulturist and pioneer of the public park movement. Since it's opening in 1897, the park has been a center of activity and culture for the City of Newburgh. Everything from concerts, ice skating, sledding, picnics, fairs, to art shows, is part of what makes the park special to so many people. Do you remember the tulip beds from many yeas ago?

The Committee is a grass roots community group that formed in the late 1980s to revitalize this neglected historic treasure. Members of the Committee act as stewards of this historic park. In keeping with the Master Plan for rehabilitation, the Committee raised over $300,000 in grants and contributions to begin work, including dredging The Polly Pond, benches, lighting and enclosing the Shelter House which has become home to the first Visitors Center for the City of Newburgh.

There will be merchandise to buy such as tee shirts and mugs. Your support of Downing Park is something that will be passed on and shared by all.

Profile : Mary Thomas, painter/quilter, candles
Mary and her husband have a small company named 'An AMariKen Co'. They manufacture candles containing 100% pure soy. Some of the features are being soot free, vegan, no carcinogens, and so are good for allergy sufferers and the environment.

Mary is also an artist and a quilter. She will have baby blankets, throws, wall hangings, scarves, etc., for sale.

"We are former residents of the Terraces (1994-2002) and miss it very much.
I was raised around the corner on Fullerton. My Dad, Mr.Politi, was a Social Studies
teacher at NFA for 42 years. I myself am retired from teaching after 32 years, most
recently with Newburgh School District . . . . we are looking forward to seeing our old
neighbors."

  Limelight : Ian Weiss, singer/songwriter

Described as a bright, young, talented singer-song writer that takes after the Dave Matthews/John Mayer sound, Ian Weiss is already playing dates in clubs and festivals early in his career.

"I've always had a love for music. I started playing when I was about 6 years old taking piano lessons. Then I took up the trumpet when I was about 9. I played jazz, clasical, and contemporary stuff. I had always felt like a natural musician, but I didn't feel like a natural piano or trumpet player. It wasn't until I started playing guitar, which was when I was about 13, that something clicked and I felt confident and comfortable playing."

Looking to get his own sound, Ian "started writing my own songs about two years ago. I have about 20 now, half of which I wrote during the summer of 2005." You'll get a chance to hear a few of these on the 16th!

Ian will be performing on the main stage at 1:00 PM

  Profile : Dave Nolan, sculptor
Making the extraordinary out of the ordinary, Dave uses the technique of assemblage to transform overlooked objects into works of art that seem to take on a personality. The category of 'found object' art can take many forms. Dave's work will not strike you as simply more of what you have seen before.

By blending the hard edge of a steel gear, the soft color of driftwood, along with an occasional touch of bright color these sculptures are a pleasing mix of visual cues. But then you realize that you didn't see the half of what Dave has done - the grouping suddenly becomes a face or some other image on a completely different level beyond the parts he used. Then you are left with the alternating impressions of the individual items used, and that of the total composition.

  Profile : Keith Nieto, multi-media
As the proprietor of an art establishment located at, and named, "188 Liberty" street, Keith has taken on the challenge of not just working in multi-media, but also multi-platform. His space serves as a stage for vintage movies and original plays; his visual art depicts some of the greatest stars of the stage and screen; even his presentation of celebrity photos is done with all the elegance of an actual stage or movie set.

Joining him will be 188 Liberty cohort & painter Terri Vargas, who like Keith "is a versatile artist, comfortable working in many media, including performing arts and jewelry design". Her work has been exhibited in New York City, Brooklyn, and as far away as France.

Keith will also be featuring his own art which will be adorned with images from the classic movie "The Wizard of Oz", a film scheduled to be shown at 188 Liberty during the upcoming season.

  Profile : Pam Wagner, painter

Pam Wagner's love of the traditional landscape comes from her being an avid hiker and camper. Always wanting to be in the outdoors herself, painting a landscape is truly a natural expression of who she is.

This self taught artist has developed an eye for capturing the palette of the natural light that is unique to the Hudson Valley. She started painting in her youth, but while she raised her family the painting was put on hold. This year marks her return to her art and she looks forward to being part of the Hudson River Valley art scene.

Spotlight : Sarah Wells Girl Scout Council
The Sarah Wells Girl Scout Council is comprised of more than 7,000 girls and more than 3,200 adult volunteers in Orange and Sullivan Counties in NY and Northeast Pike County in PA.

Year round, Girl Scouts in kindergarten through high school participate in a variety of innovative, interactive activities. Girl Scout programs address topics such as astronomy, health, math, money management, nature, science, sports, theater and much more!

Stop by their table for information about the various programs in your town. They will also be giving out stickers and free face stamping! things 4 kids!

Limelight : Judi Silvano, Jazz Vocalist

Orange County resident, Judi Silvano will bring her voice to our stage for a selection of jazz standards and originals, served up with a side order of scat! Quickly becoming a fixture in the regional music scene, Judi brings with her a wealth of experience.

Throughout the 80s, you could find Judi on any given Monday night at the Village Vanguard where the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra held forth, soaking in the great charts of Thad Jones. Before long, Judi could sing along with all the lead trumpet parts. You can trace the roots of her unique horn-like approach to vocalizing directly to this experience.

To date, Judi Silvano has six recordings to her credit, including 1997's Vocalise on the Blue Note label. She's led multiple vocal groups from Voices of Juniper to Voices Together, won numerous awards and grants (Meet the Composer, New York State Council on the Arts), been named as one of the Top 10 Vocalists in Down Beat magazine three times, and has held a post as a jazz journalist/columnist (All About Jazz). Locally, she is wrapping up a series of interactive Arts Workshops called “Pathways to Music and Dance” where singers and dancers taught students about melody and harmony by using familiar songs.

Judi and guests will play the main stage at 2:00 PM

  Profile : Tom Knieser, Photographer

Using the term "PhotoGraphics" to describe his images, Tom wants to help us to see things in a new way, slightly different - "Who says there is only one way to see the world? Our vision is limited to the visible spectrum of light and maybe things would look differently through a variety of filters".

PhotoGraphics begin with a digital image that captures the light of an instant in space-time. That photo is enhanced, filtered and layered until a new image and a new vision emerges. I revisited photography during the long, cold and beautiful winter of 2003. I took my camera and my Jimmy and began to explore the Hudson Valley with it's brooding bridges, historic buildings and glacial mountains. After downloading the images into my computer, I accessed PhotoShop Elements and began to play. The images took on news shapes and colors until they either amplified or distorted the reality.

  Profile : Katherine Ferriter
Having a love for landscape painting rooted in her passion for gardening, and illustration that is inspired by her love of children's art, Kate, who majored in Painting at Massachusetts College of Art, brings a unique range of artistic expression.

"My oil paintings reflect my love for the outdoors. I am a landscape artist, yet not in the traditional sense. I enjoy nightscapes and how the shadows become the focus."

"My children's paintings, on stepstools, tee shirts and quilts, are derived from old stories and poems from yesteryear. I enjoy doing watercolors for these as they are quick and capture the innocence of children. The paintings are more stylized and are reminiscent of artwork from the early 1900's. The poetry of Edward Lear and verses from my mothers childhood poetry books give me ideas for these drawings."

  Spotlight : Shade Tree commission

The City of Newburgh Shade Tree Commission "was formed in 1998 to protect and encourage street tree health, maintenance and beauty". Currently, there are over 2,500 street trees in Newburgh, not counting the trees in the parks or on public open land.

Some of the commission activities include our designation as a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation in order to help apply for tree replanting grants. In the area of education, there are the Citizen Pruner training classes and a forum to discuss urban forestry issues.

On display will be photo's of various Shade Tree projects. For the kid's will be handouts with word search and crossword puzzles. things 4 kids!

  Spotlight : The Arts Alliance
"Encouraging artistic expression in all disciplines" is just one of the many commitments held by The Arts Alliance of the Lower Hudson Valley. "This non-profit 501(c)3 organization was created to promote awareness of and participation in the arts through educational programming and collaborations between artists in the local and international communities. The arts represent a global common language that is capable of communicating across language, cultural and educational barriers."

One example of TAA's work is the upcoming "Art About Water: The Moodna Creek Watershed " project, which features a musical performance by Grammy award winning saxophonist Paul Winter. You will be able to get information about this and many other programs they are offering when you visit their table.

  Spotlight: Historical Society of Newburgh
Founded in 1884, the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands, is one of the nations's oldest historical societies. It's mission includes "to organize community events, fund raisers, and to help people in the region realize the benefits of it's rich historic and architectural heritage through exhibits, programs, tours and community outreach efforts".

Known throughout the Hudson Valley for the annual "Candlelight House Tour", the Historical Society has a well established reputation for celebrating the history and architecture of the Newburgh area. It also supports the arts through exhibits of regional artists and holds concerts with performances by local musicians.

At their table will many items for sale, such as books and art prints, that feature local history and points of interest along the Hudson River. You may also take them up on the offer to become a member, or enter to win a prize.

  Spotlight: Downing Film Center
Since its opening day July 22nd 2006, The Downing Film Center has been a wonderful addition to the growing arts & cultural scene of the City of Newburgh. Located on Front Street in the Yellow Bird Gallery, you can now catch a movie after eating at one of the restaurants on the waterfront.

Specializing in independent, foreign, and classic cinema, The Downing brings all your senses to life as you soak in the best the film world has to offer side-by-side with the best sculpture, drawing, and painting the art world has to offer. Forget bloated blockbusters, cheesy comedies, and stale sequels — at The Downing, film, art, and experience become one.

This establishment is the realization of the longtime dream of Newburgh resident Brian Burke. Brians' love of film began as a child spending many hours at the Irving Theatre in Carbondale Pennsylvania. And now with the help of his family, we all get to experience great film along side with the Burke family.

Limelight : Kazi Oliver Drummers & Dancers

Kazi Oliver and Geri Baker, both residents of Colonial Terraces, are showcasing their African drum and dance troop - you have been warned: the sounds will fill your head and the rhythm will take over your body! Don't worry, it's fun - you are in for quite a treat.

Djembe means unity. "My role as an artist within the community, my role as a djembe player, is to bring people together — to inspire, bring a little happiness, some joy, a lot of love, and..."

Professionally, Kazi has performed in many places. Some of his most notable appearances have been at the famed jazz venue, the Village Vanguard, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and on ABC-TV’s “The View.” Yet Kazi enjoys just as much his appearances at community festivals, schools and events that bring together multigenerational and multicultural audiences to experience and enjoy the awesome power of the African drum.

Kazi's group will perform on the main stage at 3:00 PM

She has had the opportunity to study with several nationally known watercolorists and has earned many honors in greater region. She is currently a member of such organizations as the North East Watercolor Society, the Garrison Art Center and the Middletown Art Group.

Profile : Mary Ann Neuman, photographer

"Behind the camera I am at peace with the world - internally and externally." From tranquil landscapes to emotional portraits, Mary Ann has a way of making a point; but she does it with what is still a beautiful photograph. "I often catch our world and the people in it in turmoil, struggling to adjust to the circumstances of their everyday existence", and yet it is with a sense of grace and dignity.

Additionally, "as an out-growth of my travel, and because of my formal education as a sociologist, I have created an on-going body of work entitled Somebody's Sister... These photos offer testimony to the plight of women world over".

Mary Ann offers her images as prints and as notecards as well.

  Spotlight : Food! Food! Food!

And now for everyones favorite topic. This year we needed help to expand the menu, so we called in the troops. That is, in the form of the Vietnam Veterans and The American Legion who will run the main food stand as a fund raiser.

The menu will include steak & cheese, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and chilli. Plus there will be addtional vendors with festival type foods and snacks to round out the menu!

If you wish to make any food donations or if you can volunteer on that day, please contact Gene Watkins at 845-401-8209 or through their web site.

Spotlight : Arts & Culture Commission
The recently formed Arts and Culture Commission for the City of Newburgh "was established to advise the City Government on issues related to the development of art and culture in Newburgh". This outstanding new program will give consideration to the role that the Arts play in areas such as tourism, economic development, quality of life and education. The web site www.newburgharts.com is supported by the Commission.

On the 16th, various committees of the A&CC will represented including the Artist Support & Advocacy Committee, which will be there asking artists to take part in a survey that will help the Commission identify and address your needs. This effort will go a long way to fostering a thriving art community in our area. Be sure to stop at their table and be part of the process.

  Profile : Joel McKible, painter
When speaking about the area, “I see a lot of beauty here,” says McKible, who began to explore his artistic talents in 1997 at the age of 65. Joel's work tends to capture the places that we have all been to, yet it's in his hands that they become the painting we didn't see. At one of McKible’s recent shows, artist Paul Gould commented that McKible finds “so many interesting subjects that others would pass by.”

Joel is very active in the regional art scene, showing in venues such as Artists on Campus, The Arts Alliance, Newburgh Free Library, and Newburgh's City Hall.

  Profile: Kevin Van Buren, photographer

"Photography is a magical experience exploring the natural surroundings capturing the essence of the moment with the continuously changing lighting and environmental conditions", which he does by still shooting with medium format film, following the traditions of classic landscape photographers.

Erin Quinn of The New Paltz Times writes "All of his photographs are vibrant - some focusing on the smallest of detail of nature, like a monarch butterfly resting on the petal of an orchid - others capturing the sweeping vistas of the Tent Rocks of Arizona, or the dwarf pines forest on top Shawangunk Mountain range . . . "

  Spotlight: Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra

What a musical treasure we have right in our neighborhood! Using the stage at Newburgh Free Academy, the GNSO prides itself in bringing classical music to our community. Their mission statement says, in part, "The purpose of the orchestra is to provide opportunities for young and old to experience live orchestral music at a moderate price." The GNSO is set to begin their 12th season, with the opening performance on Sept. 30th.

At their information table, you will have a chance to get the new performance schedule, buy tickets or season passes, and ask questions. You will also hear the newly released recording of them playing, which is available on CD for purchase.

  Spotlight: Newburgh Rowing Club
These guests are a new addition to Newburgh's shoreline. The NRC will join us on the 16th where you can meet some of the team members and ask about rowing. They will have on display one of their boats, so you can get an up close look at the design features that make these boats so special.

Their home is the Ward Brothers Memorial Rowing Park right on the banks of the Hudson River. And while Colonial Terraces lacks a body of water for a demonstration that day, they will be glad to tell you when they practice - so that you can see majesty of their sport.

  Profile: M. E. Whitehill, watercolorist
"I've been exploring the wonder of watercolors for twenty five years", and right from the start she has been a part of the rich art history of the Hudson Valley. At this point, her florals and historic landmark paintings are a 'must have' in any home that enjoys the classic and traditional style of the watercolor medium.

She shares her success with the Newburgh Historical Society, by donating a portion of proceeds from sales of an extensive line of notecards bearing her renderings of the Hudson River, notable Newburgh homes and institutions. This connection to history makes M.E. a perfect fit for our "Day".
