Spotlight : Downing Park Planning Committee
Downing Park was named after Newburgh's native son
Andrew Jackson Downing, eminent horticulturist and pioneer of the public park movement. Since it's opening in 1897, the park has been a center of activity and culture for the City of Newburgh. Everything from concerts, ice skating, sledding, picnics, fairs, to art shows, is part of what makes the park special to so many people. Do you remember the tulip beds from many yeas ago?
The Committee is a grass roots community group that formed in the late 1980s to revitalize this neglected historic treasure.
Members of the Committee act as stewards of this historic park. In keeping with the Master Plan for rehabilitation, the Committee raised over $300,000 in grants and contributions to begin work, including dredging The Polly Pond, benches, lighting and enclosing the Shelter House which has become home to the first Visitors Center for the City of Newburgh.
There will be merchandise to buy such as tee shirts and mugs. Your support of Downing Park is something that will be passed on and shared by all.
